Egypt decries UNSC approach to Middle East
Egypt, Politics, 3/10/2001

Egypt deplored the policies of the United Nations Security Council on the Middle East since September 28, 2000.

In a statement at the UNSC late Wednesday, Egyptian Permanent Delegate to the United Nations Ahmed Abul-Gheit said that the UNSC failed in addressing the Middle East problem in spite of its keenness to maintain respect for human rights, rule of law, and punishing officials implicated in crimes against humanity.

Abul-Gheit said that the council, due to its repeated failures in dealing successfully with the Palestinian cause and closing eyes to the Israeli systematic abuses, will further jeopardize its credibility and breach its commitment to observing equality among all parts of the world.

Abul-Gheit stressed the necessity of identifying criteria to the UNSC's resort to sanctions as a tool for changing the practices and behaviour of a regime or state.

He urged the council to comply with article 50 of the UN charter without discrimination.

On the African issues, Abul Gheit welcomed the positive developments that the council showed in dealing with the problems of Africa. Abul-Gheit called for supporting consultations between the council and states whose troops participate in peacekeeping mission.

"The countries participting in peacekeeping troops should be involved in decision-making as far as their troops' mission are concerned," said the Egyptian Chief Delegate.

Wednesday's session was convened to evaluate the effectiveness of the Security Council in shouldering its responsibilities towards preserving international peace and security.
