Morocco deplores destruction of human legacy as aggression against universal culture
Morocco-Afghanistan, Culture, 3/9/2001

The destruction of a part of human legacy is an aggression against the whole universal culture, said in Rabat Thursday Morocco's culture and information minister, Mohamed Achaari.

Asked by the first TV channel to comment on the Talibans' decision to destroy Buddhist statues in Afghanistan, the official shared the opinion of all the world intellectuals that this move is an aggression against the whole human culture.

He added that Islam does not need this hostile action against a part of human culture.

Achaari also expressed hope that actions undertaken by Islamic countries will help put an end to this operation and defend Islam which does not tolerate that human cultural expressions be endangered.

The Taliban had vowed to destroy the statues, Afghanistan's best-known archaeological treasures carved almost 2,000 years ago, sparking international condemnation.

Taliban, who are under intense international pressure to spare the monuments issued the destruction order a month after the United Nations imposed new sanctions against them.
