The first issue of al-Dawmari weekly
Syria, Culture, 3/9/2001
The first issue of the cynical Syrian weekly al-Dawmari ( originally a Turkish word which means that man who carried the torch at the mid night to lit the street, which signifies "an eye-witness news' ) was released on February 26 by the renowned Syrian caricaturist Ali Farzaat.
At the issue's inaugural editorial, Farzaat said " at the hands of the readers is the first issue of al-Dawmari in which we try to meet the ambitions of the readers." He indicated that release of this issue has been a dream for him since seven years and it has become a reality now. He added " we try through this paper to make the street (public) happier and we will leave it to the reader to 'laugh or to cry'."
The issue includes articles criticizing several social conditions and expressing the daily risks the Syrian suffers, illustrated by caricature drawings.
