Israel tries to undermine support to Syria joining UN Security Council
Syria-Israel, Politics, 3/9/2001
Israel has expressed fears over the possibility of Syria's winning of a membership in the UN Security Council.
The Israeli ambassador at the UN considered that such a matter will be " an abnormal step" and a violation to the recommendations of the 23rd item of the UN charter which asserts that countries candidates to the UN Security Council membership should contribute to the establishment of world peace and security.
The Israeli sides also asserted that Syria's election to the UN Security Council membership " creates a strange position, because Syria is an active country in a conflict."
And in order to foil Syria's nomination to the membership of the UN Security Council, Israel tries, according to the correspondent of the Israeli daily Haartez in Washington to repeat "the Libyan story" and to back instead of Syria's nomination, the nomination of any other Arab state.
But Israeli sources have the convictions that the US will not launch this battle for Israel, and therefore it is preferable not to clash over this step, because " Syria is not Libya, nor Sudan," and it is difficult for the US administration to introduce Syria as a " stubborn " state in the Middle East. Israeli sources do not rule out that Israel will launch this conflict with Syria over the membership of the UN Security Council in order to pressure Damascus to prevent activities of the " Hizbullah party" in South Lebanon.
Haaretz explained that the central states in the international community are crystallizing a support for including Syria into the Security Council for the first time in the history of this council. The elections to this effect will be held in November this year.
The Arab group and the Asian group have supported Syria. It seem that the African group is ready for Syria's nomination, as well as central European states including Russia and France. China also supports Syria and it has become difficult for the European Union to oppose this nomination. If the US does not oppose, Syria's joining the UN security council will be almost certain.
On the other hand, the Israeli TV on Thursday evening noted there are messages that are exchanged through a third party between Syria and Israel. The political correspondent for the Israeli TV said these messages are not political, rather aim at easing down conditions on the Northern front of Israel and that the US plays an effective role in this regard.
