An Israeli spying networking discovered in Lebanon

The leadership of the Lebanese army- the directorate of guidance announced on Thursday that it had arrested a spying and terrorist network working for the interests of the Israeli intelligence composed of 12 persons, arrested having with them advanced telecommunications equipment.

Members of the network admitted, according to the statement of the Lebanese army leadership, they had received training inside Israel that they were assigned to recruit persons to work for the interests of Israel and to carry out explosions in Sidon and its surrounding.

The arrested persons admitted that they had gathered information on the moves of the Lebanese national resistance and their positions and in sending these information to Israel. The network recruited a Palestinian officer at the grade of a Lt. Gen. who was also arrested and detonated several cars in Sidon and its suburbs.

The statement explained that the arrested members of the network are to be brought to the specialized judiciary sides and the equipment they had were confiscated.

What is remarkable in this network is that it was recruited ten years ago at the hands of the commander of the Western Contingent in the militias of Antoine Lahd, Aqel Ibrahim Hashem who was killed by the Lebanese national resistance in January 2000. The network includes clerks in the Lebanese custom department and in the ministry of Labor, one teacher at one of Sidon's schools, a soldier at the Lebanese security forces; and a Palestinian army officer and women and all of them are from one village situated to the east of Sidon.

The network was assigned to execute several Muslim men of religion, among them are the Imam of al-Quds mosque in Sidon Sheikh Maher hammoud and one of the Palestinian officials.

Following active investigations, the Lebanese could direct a strong blow to the Israeli intelligence by arresting members of this networking and bringing them before the court to take legal measures against them. However investigations still continue to arrest other members of this networking who are in hide.

During its ten years of work, the said spying network made the following: Spying and transferring information to Israel; creating disorder and confusion in the lines of the Lebanese national resistance and the Palestinian camps; conveying information to the Israeli side in which Israel had used in launching certain air strikes at the centers of the Lebanese national resistance and the Palestinian organizations.
