On conditions in the Palestinian territories
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 3/9/2001

The new Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon on Thursday officially assumed his post of office from his predecessor Ehud Barak. Sharon linked his approval to meet with the chairman of the Palestinian Authority to suspending the Palestinian Intifada.

The Israeli minister of the Interior Ozi Landwa renewed his government's threats to tighten the siege and increase the pressure on the Palestinians and to harm further the Palestinian economic, political and security potentials in order to suspend the Intifada.

On Wednesday evening the Israeli army forces opened fire against Palestinian aggregations and the roads they use near Ramullah and Nablus in the West Bank.

Palestinian sources said the Israeli army also escalated its oppressive measures in Gaza and prevented traffic movement near the Israeli settlements in Gaza and increased the number of military barriers near the Palestinian camps in Gaza.

In retaliation to these offensive Israeli attacks and measures, the Palestinian Intifada youths detonated an explosive when an Israeli military patrol passed near the Palestinian Sadra village in the West Bank and they threw stones at an Israeli patrol near Marda village to the north of Ramullah in the West Bank and opened fire at the Israeli soldiers who are deployed around Bsaghout settlement near Ramullah.

A Palestinian female teenager knifed an Israeli policeman and he was wounded near the old town of occupied Jerusalem as he tried to attack her.

The Israeli radio said that the Israeli police arrested the Palestinian girl and she is to be brought to the court.

On the other hand, the Israeli authorities received 1500 messages from local and international figures working in the judiciary area demanding the release of the Palestinian teenager Suad Ghazzal in December 12, 1998 and she was under 15 year old, under the charge of stabbing an Israeli woman settler and the Israeli military attorney general by jailing her for ten years.

The detained child was strongly beaten and tortured in her cell since she was arrested and her family is forbidden from her visit in al-Ramlah military prison together with other three Palestinian women.

On the other hand, the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon linked between the approval to meet with the chairman of the Palestinian Authority Yasser Arafat by foiling the palestinian Intifada.

Sharon said during his investiture ceremony as a prime minister on Thursday from his predecessor Ehud Barak that he is ready to meet with Arafat and negotiate with him after security is attained in the Palestinian territories, in remarks to the continued Palestinian Intifada.
