King Mohammed impacted Morocco's economic development process, Egyptian daily
Morocco, Politics, 3/8/2001
Morocco's King Mohammed VI has impacted Morocco's economic development process thanks to the adoption of a liberal policy and the setting up of a tax system, flexible and attractive to foreign investors, writes Egyptian daily Al Ahram.
The daily recalls that the Moroccan king who has been respectful of his father's choices mainly regarding attachment to constitutional monarchy, the multi-party system and economic and political liberalism, has been endeavoring since his enthronement to promote a liberal economy able to integrate Morocco in World economy.
The political reform process in Morocco, marked by continuity, pluralism consolidation and political overture was crowned by alternation in power, a fact that singled out the kingdom in the Arab modern political history, the daily stated.
This "qualitative stride" in the democratic process was made possible by unanimity over major issues, the daily explained, adding that the main trend in the Moroccan opposition is at the center and left-center, a fact that naturally places the liberal trend close to the power. Likewise, the leftist trend is closer to the reformist trend than to the radical trend, especially after the collapse of the communist ideology and the failure of socialist experiences at the world level.
The daily stated further that the consensus on Morocco's national cause, namely the Sahara issue, is behind the high level of understanding between all political parties.
Touching on the role of the civil society in promoting the pluralist system, the daily said political progress in the Moroccan society, like in all other Arab societies that adopted the pluralist system "depends on the promotion of the civil society components" and that the consolidation of the democratic process depends on the preservation of freedoms and the guarantee of alternation in power.
