Syria celebrates women's world day

Syria is taking part in the world's celebrations of the Women's world day which is convened this year under the slogan of " education for girls."

Syria, in effect has achieved great strides in this respect. Besides the free of charge education, schools have been built even in remote areas of tiny people's aggregations and mobile schools reached even the Badia ( the desert).

Number of female students between the years 1970- 1998 at elementary schools increased from 297,000 to 1,267,000 at an annual increase of 5.2%; at preparatory schools from 54,000 to 338,000 representing an increase of 6.6% and in secondary schools the number of female students raised from 17,000 to 72,000 at an increase of 5.2%.

As for female students vocational education and training and for the same period the number increased from 600 to 63,000 with an increase of 16.5%, in the intermediate education from 14, 000 to 52,400 representing an increase of 10% and at university number of female students for the same period increase from 68,000 to 576,000.

Figures of 1998 said that female students at the elementary schools in the country represent 47.7%, preparatory schools 45%; secondary general school 50.7%. technical and vocational secondary schools female students represent 45.3% and they are 46.4 % at universities.

This year's Motto " education for girls" is considered the essence and the focal point of the projects of international developmental projects carried out in Syria. The process of training and qualification of women occupies special importance with the aim to help women to start a permanent work program enabling her to attain self- sufficiency at the family level.

The " Green belt" and the "afforestation and pastures monitoring "projects are considered among the most important carried out in Syria besides the food aids program provided to withstand the wave of drought cattle breeders face in the Syrian desert.
