Some 50 gunmen killed in Algeria

Joint forces representing the Algerian army and security forces killed by the end of last week some 50 gunmen including 11 leading figures, according to the Algerian daily al-Khabar.

The Algerian daily al-Khabar added, according to security and military sources that the joint forces besieged the gunmen who were hiding in a cave to convene a conference aiming at re-organizing their ranks and restoring back their positions at " Bu Taleb mountains" where armed operations became fewer.

Following the repeated calls made by the joint forces on the gunmen to surrender, they refused the calls. A matter which obliged the forces to detonate the entrance of the cave.

The paper quoted testimonies made by security members guarding the area especially the cave said the " rotund smells" started to come from inside the cave which is an evidence that all its occupants are dead.

On the other hand, armed groups on Sunday evening assassinated 10 citizens in the provinces of Skeiklat, Deyanta and Teyaza.

On Wednesday an explosion took place near a unit for protecting the city near the sport complex in the downtown of the capital Algiers. No human or material losses were inflected.

A source at the Algerian civil protection department said that the explosion took place when members of the department were burning weeds near the said center.
