Syria-Vatican, Politics, 3/7/2001

The secretary of the Patriarchy of the Catholic- Greek Church Ezedour Bateikha on Monday said that John Paul II will visit, during his visit to Damascus the tomb of Saint John the Baptist inside the mosque, and therefore he will be the first Pope to enter a mosque.

Bateikha who is the chairman of the preparatory committee for the papal visit to Syria said in a statement to AFP that the visit of Pope John Paul II to the Umayyad's mosque will be an occasion for an un-preceded incident which will be manifested in establishing a joint Islamic- and Christian prayer organized for this purpose.

He added that Pope John Paul will be the first Pope to visit the tomb of John Paul inside the Umyyad's mosque on May 6 on the wake of his arrival in Syria.

He added that this is the first time in which Muslims and Christians pray together in an organized way as the Pope will preside over the prayer on the Christian side while the Republic's mufti in Syria Sheikh Ahmad Kiftaro will president the Muslim side.
