King Mohammed receives women figures
Morocco, Politics, 3/7/2001
Morocco's King Mohammed VI, who was accompanied by his brother Prince Moulay Rachid, received on Monday afternoon a group of women representing political parties and women associations.
A presentation by Saadia Belmir, head of chamber at the supreme court and member of the constitutional council, asked the sovereign, in his capacity as commander of the faithful, protector of the religion and warrant of individual and collective rights, to issue his wise instructions and orientations to render further justice to Moroccan women and help them hold their due place in all walks of national life, mainly as regards the amendment of some provisions of the Moudawana (code regulating marriage, divorce and other family issues).
The king announced the inception of a commission which will probe mechanisms and procedures to guarantee a sound implementation of the personal statute code, look into amendment drafts to the Moudawana and submit the project to his appreciation. The commission will include specialized figures in the field, including ulema (Islamic theologians), magistrates and all sides involved in consultations with the civil society.
The sovereign lauded the civil society dynamism in matters of women promotion and urged all potentials to double efforts in this field, while making the values of constructive dialogue and common action prevail so that the modernization of the legal framework regulating Moroccan family issues be a factor favoring family coherence and the consolidation of a united national social fabric, aware of its rights and endeavoring to fulfill its duties.
The presentation made before the sovereign also recalls the role played by the Moroccan monarchy institution in modernizing the country, since the historic speech of Princess Lalla Aicha in Tangiers with its political message and deep social meanings and through which the late king Mohammed V meant to stress the place that women could hold by education and training.
The presentation, delivered in the name of all the political parties and women associations received by the sovereign, also pays tribute to the late king Hassan II who enabled Moroccan women to accede to various activity fields, education, knowledge and science as well as political decision-making by appointing women to top positions. History will remember that the late king had responded positively to the call of women and other national lively forces in 1993 and had said that in his capacity as commander of the faithful he adheres to the need to render justice to Moroccan women, while lauding women's attachment to their identity and religion and insisting that "Islam does not run counter to emancipation and progress."
The figures received by King Mohammed VI represent various women associations, women branches of several political parties (USFP, MDS, UC, MP, MNP, RNI, PI, PPS, OADP, PND, PJD) lawyers, university teachers, medical doctors, information professionals, enterprises, and national figures.
