Tourism and expatriates remittances rise in 2000, foreign investments and private loans drop

The financial flows in 2000 were marked by an increase in tourism returns (10.3%) and remittances of Moroccan expatriates (11%), while foreign private loans and investments dropped by 33%.

The exchange office says tourism returns were worth 21 billion DH in 2000 ( two billion US $) compared to 19.1 billion DH in 1999 (1.81 billion US $) in 1999. Compared to the average figures recorded in the 1995-1999 period (15 billion DH or 1.42 billion US $), tourism returns progressed by 39.9%.

Remittances of Moroccan expatriates reached 21.1 billion DH in 2000 (two billion US $) while they stood at 19 billion DH in 1999 (1.8 billion US $). Compared to the average of 18.4 billion DH ($1.75 billion) recorded in the period between 1995 and 1999, funds transferred home by Moroccans living abroad progressed by 14.6%.

The year 2000 was not a good one for foreign investments and private loans which dropped by 33% from 18.5 billion DH (1.76 Bln $) to 12.36 billion DH ($ 1.17 Bln).
