Human rights watch permitted in Bahrain
Bahrain, Culture, 3/7/2001

Bahraini activists said on March 4 they had got an official permit to found an independent group for human rights in the country.

The chairperson of the group Sabeika al-Najjar said that the ministry of social affairs and labor contacts the staff responsible for the human rights group project and informed them its consent to their application, adding that the consent was also sent by official post.

Two of the activists met with the prime minister Sheikh Khaleifa Bin Salman al-Khaleifa who, by his turn gave them the green light to establish the Bahraini human rights society which is composed of 16 men and women, many of them are lawyers.

In 1999, the Bahraini government formed a human rights committee composed of members at the Shoura council. A council which is appointed by the Emir of the country and does not enjoy legislative authorities.
