Sudanese detainees released
Sudan, Politics, 2/28/2001

The Sudanese minister of the Interior lt. Gen. Abdul Rahim Muhammad Hussein has announced that most of those who were held from the People's Congress party which is led by Hassan al-Turabi were released in al-Khartoum and other Sudanese provinces.

In a statement to the Sudanese daily al-Ayam issued on Tuesday, Lt. Gen. Hussein explained that the aim behind arresting those was to initiate a dialogue with them to find out their position regarding the agreement signed between the party and the rebellion movement led by John Garang, adding that most of the "People's Congress" detainees expressed their reservations over this agreement which aims at fighting the state.

He added that directives were given to the security forces to limit the detention to those who constitute a direct threat to the security and who in open declare hostility to the government.

On the other hand, the Sudanese minister of Justice Ali Muhammad Othman Yassin announced bringing to the court opposition coalition secretariat detainees.
