Star of David, Emirates - Iran conflict on agenda of Arab League council
Regional, Politics, 2/28/2001

Sources at the Arab League said that the permanent representatives at the Arab League agreed on Tuesday to the agenda for the council of the Arab foreign ministers who are due to meet in Cairo in March.

The sources said that the representatives approved four new items besides other 38 items existed from previous sessions.

The Arab foreign ministers will discuss during their meeting to be held on March 12 and 13 the attempts made by Israel to register certain archaeological sites in East Jerusalem within the list of the world heritage.

One of the sources said that this aims at proving the Israeli sovereignty on the Arab Jerusalem and certain sites in the west bank.

The council will also discuss Israel's request to add the Red Star of David to the emblem of the Red Cross and the red crescent. The Palestinian authority had refused the Israeli request because that the "Red Star of David" was a symbol of aggression as it is printed on the Israeli planes and tanks and other Israeli military equipment.

The Arab foreign ministers will also discuss co-operation in the area of intellectual property and coordinating Arab stances before the meeting of the preliminary committee of the International criminal court on September 24 through October 5th.

The fixed item on the agenda include the Arab- Israeli conflict, the decision of the Arab summit to back Jerusalem, solidarity with Lebanon and the Lebanese detainees in the Israeli jails as well as the draft agenda of the next Arab summit to be held in Amman by the end of March.

The Arab ministers will also discuss the conflict between Iran and the United Arab Emirates UAE concerning the three Gulf islands, conditions in Somalia, Comoros and Sudan and the Turkish- Israeli military co-operation.

Among the topics to be also discussed by the Arab foreign ministers is a work-paper about revitalizing the Arab boycott of israel.

However, the Arab bureau for boycotting Israel which has Damascus as a headquarters had prepared suggestions to strengthen the boycott measures, noting that this boycott costs Israel almost USD 3 billion every year if the Arab states abide by them.
