Al-Assad, Powell discuss situation in ME, US role in peace process urged

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad on Monday at the Damascus al-Shaab palace received the US secretary of State Colin Powell who arrived in Damascus in a short visit to Syria.

Talks dealt with the situation and developments in the region and the US state secretary presented an idea about the aim and outcome of his current tour on the area.

President al-Assad asserted Syria's commitment to the ME peace process on the Madrid terms of reference, UN resolutions and the land for peace formula. The President called for an active and neutral role of the American sponsor, noting that the realization of peace is the guarantee for security and stability.

Powell expressed interest in the presentation offered by the President about Syria's view of the situation and ways to deal with it later in the day, Powell left Damascus, where he was seen off at the Damascus International Airport by foreign minister al-Shara, the Syrian ambassador in the US and the US ambassador in Damascus.

Before arriving in Damascus Powell was in Saudi Arabia, where he discussed with King Fahd Bin Abdul Aziz conditions on the Arab and International arenas and discussed also with the Saudi crown prince Abdullah bilateral relations and latest political conditions.

On Monday also the ruler of Kuwait Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmad al-Sabah met with Powel and members of the accompanying delegation. American Ð Kuwaiti relations were reviewed.
