Sudan: al-Turabi's detention is a political measure
Sudan, Politics, 2/26/2001

The Sudanese ministry of justice on Saturday described the detention of the secretary general of the people's congress party Hassan al-Turabi, together with several members of his party's leadership as a political measure that has no connection to the investigations made with them.

In a statement to the Sudanese daily al-Rai al-Am issued on Saturday, the Sudanese minister of justice Ali Muhammad Othman Yassin said he can not decide whether al-Turabi will be brought before the course or not because the currently pursued measures are still within the responsibility of security specialization, due to the fact the detention ( of al-Turabi) was made according to the " general security law."

On the other hand, a Sudanese high ranking source denied in a statement to the Sudanese daily Alwan (colors) on Saturday that the specialized security authorities had evacuated al-Turabi from Kober prison to another place, as stated by certain news agencies.
