Free trade exchange on Agenda of Gulf states and European Union
Gulf-European Union, Economics, 2/26/2001
Bahrain will host on April 23 and 24 the joint ministerial conference for the foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council and the European Union.
The Bahraini daily al-Ayam published on Saturday in al-Manama said that the question of the free trade exchange between the Gulf and European groups is on the top agenda of the meeting, noting that it is expected that cooperation in the field of oil and natural gas and energy in general will be predominant in the coming meetings, especially after reaching an initial agreement to strengthen cooperation and dialogue between the oil producing and consuming countries.
Worthy mentioning that this conference will be preceded by a new round of negotiations between the two sides at the levels of experts, that will be held in Brussels on March 21 and 22 to discuss several issues relating to trade and economic co-operation.
In 1989 the Gulf Cooperation Council and the European Union signed a co-operation agreement that states the convening of a ministerial council at the level of foreign ministers annually, with the aim to strengthen trade relations, open the markets between the two sides as well as consolidating stability in the Gulf region.
