Mubarak, two Congressmen probe Egypt-US ties, peace process
Egypt-USA, Politics, 2/24/2001

Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak yesterday received US Senate delegation chired by Senator Edward Stevens. The President also received member of House of Representatives James P. Moran.

US Republican Senator Stevens said that he and his accompanying delegation had a very good meeting with President Hosni Mubarak in Cairo Thursday. "President Mubarak is an old friend of the US," he added.

"We examined a host of issues, primarily bilateral relations and the upcoming tour of US Secretary of State Colin Powell to the region," he said.

Global changes were also examined foremost the communications and technology revolution and its effects on education, he added.

He said that the US appreciates Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak efforts in this field.

Senator Stevens also expressed satisfaction over visiting Egypt, especially Luxor, and said that he held talks with the Ministers of Defense and Foreign Affairs on Wednesday and the Prime Minister earlier in the day.

Meanwhile, US Congressman and Member of the Defense and Budget Committees Moran said that President Mubarak clearly represents the political leadership we are working with in order to break the ice between the Palestinians and Israelis.

In statements following a meeting with Mubarak Thursday, Moran said that the last matter discussed with President Mubarak was that all the peoples of the region have values and should learn to respect each other. Moran noted that he had been encouraged by his talks with President Mubarak.

He said that his delegation visited Tel Aviv and Jerusalem and met with the King of Jordan and the Lebanese President.

Moran said that former US President Bill Clinton advised incumbent President George W. Bush to work on reaching mutual grounds between parties to the dispute.

"It is so obvious that the results of the Israeli elections have brought about a stand that is not yet determined, but it creates some kind of anxiety due to some statements and previous stands," said the US Congressman.

"President Mubarak focused on economic development and providing job opportunities for his people, but he also stressed that this can never be achieved within the disputes and tension in the Middle East region," Moran said.

On whether the delegation discussed Egyptian-US military cooperation with President Mubarak, Moran noted that his two US Senate colleagues dealt with this issue during their meeting with President Mubarak on Thursday.
