Russian communist party leader in Egypt: relations are great
Egypt-Russia, Politics, 2/22/2001

Speaking to the press upon arrival in Cairo Wednesday for a visit at the invitation of People's Assembly Speaker Fathi Sorour, Russian Communist Party leader Gennady Zuganov termed Egyptian-Russian relations as long-standing and special.

"Egypt's standing in the Arab world and the world, as a whole has always been great," he said.

On the constant Israeli aggression on the Palestinian people in the occupied lands, he said, "We strongly deplore such actions," adding that the coming Israeli government under Ariel Sharon caused concern to the world.

"Russia must play an ideal role in bringing peace to the Middle East," he said.

The head of the Russian Communist Party termed the latest American and British strikes on Baghdad as brutal attacks.

The application of UN Security Council resolutions must be the concern of the whole world, and not just the US and Britain, he added.

"We, as a Russian popular leftist bloc have expressed our view on the issue, the party convened on Saturday, strongly denounced the American and British attacks and called on the Russian Government to work towards lifting the embargo on Iraq," he said.

Meanwhile, People's Assembly Speaker, Ahmed Fathi Sorour Wednesday held a meeting with Zyuganov.

The meeting dealt with means of promoting bilateral cooperation in the parliamentary field in addition to the Middle East peace process.

Sorour underlined the importance of developing economic cooperation between the two countries and removing all hurdles impeding the increase of the Egyptian exports to Russia.

Sorour said Russia is one of the co-sponsors of peace, asserting that stability is closely linked to peace.

The Middle East region is passing through a critical stage at the time being, sorour said, warning that the lack of stability would adversely affect the entire world.

He stressed that the Palestinians have the right to regain all their usurped territories.
