Statue dating to Akhenaton era
Egypt, History, 2/22/2001
An Egyptian-Dutch archaeological mission discovered the statue of the couple Meri Raa, the top priest of the Pharaonic god Aton, and his wife, inside a tomb excavated in Sakara one month ago.
Gaballah Ali Gaballah, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), said the 85-centimeter - long, 60 centimeter-wide and 50 centimeter-thick statue dates back to Akhnaton dynasty and is considered one of the rare statues that have been discovered in 50 years. The statue is made of limestone.
Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Gaballah Ali Gaballah said that the priest and his wife were found sitting on a lion-legged chair.
He added that the wife was sitting on the right of her husband and stretching her right arm around her husband's back. The statue has been found in the west south corner of the tomb.
The priest is draped in the country's flag with a belt around his waist. His right hand was on his knee and was holding the flag with the other one.
A ten-line text is inscribed on the back of the statue, said General Director of the Giza Monuments Zahi Hawas. 'The text cites the titles of the priest and his wife,' he added.
