Britain Qatar and Iraq and the UN sanctions negotiations
Iraq-Qatar-UK, Politics, 2/22/2001
British sources said that the British foreign ministry has made a contract with the Qatari foreign minister Sheikh Hamad Bin Jasem al-Thani in 2000 to pave the way before a dialogue with Baghdad to be conducive to the implementation of UN resolution 1284 which calls for the restoration of the inspectors of the Iraqi weapons.
The sources told the British daily Financial Times, as stated by the BBC on Wednesday, that this agreement prepares for efforts carried out by Qatar's ambassador in London to travel to Iraq to brief the Iraqi authorities with Britain's "Flexibility" and her readiness for unofficial negotiations.
The paper quoted the former British foreign minister Peter Haine as saying that London has made these moves after Arab Gulf states conveyed to Britain their desire to work for settling the complex situation in Iraq.
