On Iraq relations with neighboring states
Iraq-Regional, Politics, 2/21/2001
The British daily " Financial Times' said in its Tuesday's issue that the Arab states neighboring Iraq like to rehabilitate it in the region for a strong reason which is that its return back is considered vital for the economics of the neighboring states which suffer recession.
The paper added that Syria and Egypt have signed trade agreements with Iraq after they had called in open to end the economic sanctions imposed on it.
The British daily continued that the Syrian government also agreed to open the Iraqi oil pipelines which crosses the Syrian territories and it is calmly buying the cheaper Iraqi oil, and although this is considered by the west as a violation to the UN instructions, the Western diplomats in Damascus say that Syria can argue with the UN on its relations with Iraq, as the UN permits special deals between Jordan and Iraq concerning the oil and it ( the UN) keeps a blind eye also on the huge amounts of the Iraqi oil which has been smuggled through Turkey.
The paper added that the country which is urgently in need for the rehabilitation of Iraq is Jordan whose economy suffers a lot as a result of the sanctions imposed on Iraq and the continued Intifada in the West bank and Gaza.
