AL Cheif confers with Canadian official about ME situation
Regional-Canada, Politics, 2/21/2001
The Secretary General of the Arab league AL Ismat Abdul Miguid has asserted that stances of the Israeli prime minister elect Ariel Sharon and his history are not promising for the peace process which are based on UN Security Council resolutions 242 and 338 and the land for peace formula.
During his meeting on Tuesday with the envoy of the Canadian embassy for the ME peace process Michael Maloi, the AL chief held Israel responsible for obstructing the peace process and intensifying conditions in the Middle East.
The Al chief also asserted the commitment of the Arabs to the requirements of just and comprehensive peace and Israel's withdrawal from all occupied Arab territories in Jerusalem and the Golan up to June 4, 1967 border lines.
For his part, the Canadian official stressed his country's backing to the right of the refugees to return back. He explained that his country always votes for the UN security council resolution no. 194 of 1948 issued by the UN general assembly concerning the right of the Palestinian refugees. He said that Canada considers that the best thing is the return of the refugee to his homeland.
The Canadian official indicated that his visit to the region covers each of Egypt, Syria and Jordan as well as the Palestinian territories and israel.
Meantime, well-informed sources at the Arab league denied that the Canadian official had proposed his country to host a number of Palestinian refugees. The sources added that the Canadian official only proposed his country's experience in ways of containing these refugees when a solution is reached for their problem.
