Israeli concerns over Syria's efforts to be a non- permanent member at UN Security Council
Syria-Israel, Politics, 2/20/2001

The Lebanese daily al-Mustaqbal issued on Monday said that the Israeli daily Maareve unveiled on Sunday that Tel Aviv has great fears and concern over the possibility of the success of the efforts made by Syria to win the non- permanent membership seat at the UN Security Council.

Maareve quoted sources at the Israeli foreign ministry as saying that Israel will be obliged to launch a counter- campaign to the Syrian efforts as it will be difficult for Israel to deal with Syria's presence at the UN Security Council at a phase of critical political conditions at the regional level and when there is an authority transfer in Israel.

Meantime, Israeli press reports said that Israel is preparing to submit its opposition answer to the possible Syria joining the UN Security Council and will try to resort to the support of the US and its allies to halt the Syrian attitude.
