Calls to promote micro-loans in Morocco
Morocco, Economics, 2/19/2001

Participants in a colloquy on fight against poverty in Morocco called for the promotion of micro-loans and to create banks for the poor as a means to eradicate the social plague in the North African country.

The fight against poverty should be intensified to guarantee decent life for the least favored layers of society, participants said.

The colloquy stressed the importance of the social projects carried by the Arab Gulf Program for Backing to United Nations Development Agencies, chaired by Saudi Prince Talal Ibn Abdelaziz.

The banks for the poor project, initiated by Prince Talal, was implemented in Jordan and Yemen, where two such banks are already operating. Prince Talal wants to extend the project to other Arab countries.

The colloquy was held part of the Arab Regional Forum of Non-Governmental Organizations on children, convened in Rabat February 15-19.

participants in the forum debated on Sunday the incidence of poverty and economic policies on child condition in the Arab world.

In this vein, experts attending the debate called for taking into account the child condition in devising policies, children being a major component of the society.

The experts deplored that children are the main victims of economic sanctions imposed on Iraq, Libya and Palestine.

"Children living in countries submitted to embargo, like Iraq, Libya and Palestine, are victims of human rights violations on a daily basis," deplored Ms. Bahia Hariri, Lebanese MP and UNICEF Good Will Ambassador.
