Mubarak calls Israelis to extend hand to Arabs for better future and peace
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 2/17/2001

Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak has called the Israeli people, now that they have chosen a new Prime Minister, to extend a hand to Arab peoples for a better future for both sides.

In a statement on Friday, read out on his behalf by Mufeed Shehab, Minister of Higher Education and State for Scientific Research, before the 38th session of the Francophone youth and sports ministers, President Mubarak reiterated Egypt's welcome of all peace initiatives aimed at appeasing frustration, reining in extremism and terrorism and opening up new vistas of cooperation among the region's peoples.

Mubarak reiterated Egypt's unwavering faith in the just and comprehensive peace option, a peace, he said, that should be based on respect for international law and legitimacy, as the key to solving the Middle East problem.

Mubarak wished the Francophone youth and sports ministers success with their work. He highlighted the importance of youths' role in their communities and said due attention should be given to the mental and physical development of young people, along with enabling them to communicate with other cultures.

Mubarak said although Egypt joined the Francophone Organization in 1994, it had since been keen on cooperating with it and actively contributing to its activities.

The first session of the 28th conference of Ministers of Youth and Sports of the Francophone organization kicked off Friday evening in Cairo.

Minister of Youth and Sports Ali Eddin Helal said that the agenda of the conference will be approved and that the executive panel of the current session will be elected.

Helal, Meanwhile, has been elected as head of the executive bureau of the organization for 2001 and 2002. Helal said that People's Assembly speaker Fathi Srour would attend the closing session of the conference on Saturday and address the session.
