Sudan stresses backing to Morocco's territorial integrity
Sudan-Morocco, Politics, 2/17/2001

Sudan has stressed its backing to the territorial integrity of Morocco. "Our position regarding the Sahara issue is constant. We are unionists," Sudanese foreign minister, Mustapha Othmane Ismail, told MAP news agency.

Ismail, who recalled Sudan's participation in the 1975 Green March whereby Morocco liberated its southern provinces from Spanish occupation, underlined that "Sudan voted against the independence of the Sahara and against the admission of the so-called SADR republic to the Organization of African Unity."

The Foreign minister added that Khartoum "maintained its unionist position even when Morocco started to accept international solutions calling for the right to self-determination." "We accepted this situation reluctantly because it is a Moroccan choice," he said.

Ismail further noted that his country also suffers from the problem of separatism, as there are some powers seeking to divide Sudan.
