Five Iraqis killed, 8 wounded by US- British air strikes
Iraq-USA, Politics, 2/17/2001

The Iraqi capital Baghdad on Friday underwent air strikes carried out by 24 British and American planes and both London and Washington admitted of launching the air raids and the White House confirmed that President George Bush permitted these strikes.

The bombardment resulted in killing five Iraqis and wounding five including three children and three women, according to the Iraqi TV which severed its ordinary programs and started broadcasting national songs.

The Iraqi TV also announced later that " Baghdad has been exposed to an attack by the American aggressors," noting that this aggression is not new as the enemies strike the Iraqi cities daily.

Eye-witnesses said that they heard clearly the sound of three enormous explosions in Baghdad and the Iraqi defense means opened their fire against the raiding planes which dropped several missiles against Baghdad and forced the planes to flee.

The US defense department stressed that British and American planes directed strikes to targets situated to the south of Baghdad.

An official at the US state department asked not to be identified said that the raiding planes hit six leadership positions and a radar. He added that the strikes were carried out in response to the increased Iraqi activities against the British and American planes that fly in the no fly zone in Southern Iraq.
