Maghreban human resources commission meets in Nouakchott
Mauritania-Maghreb, Politics, 2/16/2001

The Maghreban human resources commission held its 9th session in Nouakchott, Mauritania, February 14-15 and participating ministers of education called for reactivating the commission and sub-commissions stemming from it.

The ministers of education of Algeria, Mauritania, Morocco, and Tunisia and the representative of Libya --the five countries forming the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA)-- called for reconsidering the mechanisms of cooperation between the five UMA members in human resources matters and to trade experience and expertise to promote health programs.

They insisted on the need to set up a consultation framework between Maghreban health ministers for a better coordination in health matters and called on UMA members to approve the soonest possible the Maghreban health convention.

The heads of participating delegations were received Thursday by President Mouaouya Ould Sid Ahmed Tayaa.

The Moroccan delegation to the session was led by minister of higher education, staff training and scientific research, Najib Zerouali, and included officials from the departments of national education, employment, vocational training, youth and sports, health, justice, culture and communication.

The commission's previous session was held in Tripoli in 1995, as the UMA mechanisms were paralyzed due to strained relations between member countries, and especially between Morocco and Algeria over Algiers' direct involvement in the Sahara issue.

Last January, UMA Foreign ministers who met in Yaounde on the sidelines of the 21st France-Africa summit, decided to reactivate the UMA sectoral commissions and the follow-up commission, and to hold a meeting in Algiers after Eid Al-Adha (Muslim immolation feast).

Last week, Rabat hosted the ministerial food security commission and two other ministerial commissions, namely those of infrastructure and economy and finance will hold meetings later this month respectively in Tunisia and Libya.

UMA was set up in Marrakesh in 1989 by Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia.
