Morocco rejects expulsion of undocumented immigrants from Spain
Morocco-Spain, Politics, 2/15/2001
Morocco said it rejects the expulsion of undocumented immigrants from Spain.
Moroccan justice minister, Omar Azziman, told the Spanish private radio Cadena Ser that Morocco rejects the expulsion of undocumented immigrants, although it encourages the voluntary return of immigrants to their country.
"Immigrants can be expelled only in exceptional circumstances, such as infractions cases, he said, adding that Moroccan expatriates live in countries where the rule of law prevails and where they have duties and rights.
"Giving foreigners a status lower than that of citizens is not a sound situation in view of human rights and the values that we share," Azziman deplored, adding "Moroccans who wish to return voluntarily to their homeland are welcome."
The minister requested the regularization of the situation of undocumented immigrants who are staging sit-ins in nine churches in Barcelona.
Azziman further surveyed the efforts deployed by Morocco to fight illegal immigration. He conceded "Morocco cannot install check points in its shores every three meters." "This is impossible," he said.
