Regional, Religion, 2/14/2001
Egypt's Prime Minister Atef Ebeid opened Tuesday the 9th conference of the organization of Islamic capitals and cities hosted by Cairo and run for three days.
In his speech, Ebeid spoke of some requirements pertaining to refurbishment of Islamic capitals and cities, noting inhabitants of Islamic cities are on the rise, a matter that imposes continued planning for current and new areas.
He stressed people's right to live in a clean environment, adding it is no longer a luxurious demand.
He voiced hope that a better tomorrow is realized with the participation of the entire society to carry out President Hosni Mubarak directives.
Ebeid praised the organization's efforts and its secretary-general for the role to rally ranks and increase knowledge for more prosperity.
On his part, Cairo governor and chairman of the conference, Abdul-Rahim Shehata said "The conference is held under very difficult international and regional circumstances despite the calling for realizing peace and progress for all world peoples."
Shehata stressed the necessity of supporting the Palestinians till all legitimate and regional resolutions are executed and till they restore their rights to lead an honorable life.
On the other hand, Mayor of Doha made a surprise yesterday by refusing to hold the deputy chairman post.
He gave the excuse that he had participated in all organizing committees which was not true. Some said that he refrained from holding that post for political reasons.
Electing the governors of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Banjol, Gambia, as deputy's chairmen, ended the crisis.
The conference agreed to add a new item on issuing a statement on the Palestinian Intifada and AL Quds (Jerusalem).
During the first session, nine Islamic cities signed a twining agreement with AL Quds (Jerusalem) municipality.
The agreement was signed by the Egyptian cities of Alexandria, Giza and Banha as well as Tehran, Beirut, Dubai, Doha, and Kuala Lumpur.
On the other hand, Alexandria won the first-class shield of the organization of Islamic Capitals out of appreciating it cultural efforts in improving and maintaining the environment.
In this connection, Al-Mahmoudia canal was rendered an ideal example to be benefited from.
