Fresh archeological find in Alexandria
Egypt, History, 2/12/2001
The Egyptian -French mission under Alexandria Antiquities Director Adli Rushdie unearthed a rare white marble statue of Septimius Severus, Roman emperor from 193 until 211 AD, in Mahatet El-raml, Alexandria.
Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) Gaballah Ali Gaballah said the statue depicts the Roman king clad in war attire with two eagles facing each other on the chest. A chain of medallion representing the head of a lion and dragon was also found.
The SCA Chief said the excavation was made on two stages as the lower part was unearthed four months ago and then the upper part was found without the head.
A report on the find was submitted to the Minister of Culture Farouk Hosni so as to earmark funds necessary for restoration works and resumption of excavations.
