A UN committee formulates anti-terrorism agreement
Regional, Politics, 2/10/2001
The United Nations committee on combating terrorism resumes deliberations this week on a comprehensive draft agreement on combatting terrorism.
The draft agreement was presented by India, after several years of consultations.
The international community has worked out 12 agreements since its creation in the 60s and its early agreements on prevention of hijacking planes and piracy.
In 1999, an international agreement, designed to deny terrorist groups funds, was approved and signed.
Egypt's Permanent Delegate to the United Nations Ahmad Abul Gheit said that Egypt would take part in formulating the agreement on combating terrorism.
Abul Gheit said the Egyptian delegation would seek a definition to terrorism as the international community failed in the past to draw up the exact definition.
"The Egyptian delegation would also seek to differentiate between acts of terrorism, national liberation activities and armed struggle, and try to prevent providing a safe haven for territories including political asylum for them," added Abul Gheit.
He concluded that Egypt had signed or joined 12 international agreements on combating terrorism, in addition to three other agreements in the same field.
