Israel threatens to occupy parts of Sinai
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 2/10/2001
In its today's issue, the London- based " al-Muharrir al-Arabi" daily said that Washington investigates in a report it had received on late Wednesday night stating that Ariel Sharon told officers of the Israeli army who came to congratulate him on winning the Israeli elections as a prime minister that he will not hesitate to occupy key parts of Sinai if he finds out that the Egyptians are backing the operations of smuggling weapons and fighters to Gaza sector.
The information indicated that Sharon believes that there is a land- bridge between Sinai and Gaza which helped the Palestinians stockpiling huge amounts of ammunition and weapons, including missiles, despite the fact that he had learnt from his predecessor Barak about this matter and that Barak noted very limited leaking operations.
According to the said repot Sharon told the officers that the Israeli army can install an isolated area inside Sinai within hours and that he can do so despite the peace treaty signed between Cairo and Tel Aviv.
