Moroccan FM on Sharon's elections: we should not anticipate events
Morocco-Israel, Politics, 2/9/2001

Moroccan minister of foreign affairs and cooperation, Mohamed Benaissa, said Arabs should not anticipate events after Ariel Sharon's election as prime minister of Israel and should not take hasty decisions.

The minister told Egyptian news agency MENA Arabs should wait and consult each other. An Arab summit is slated next month in Amman and the Arab League follow up committee will be meeting this Feb.9-10 in Amman to decide on a position, he said.

He went on it is too early to make plans. It is better to make sure about facts on the ground and know the Palestinian authority stance before taking measures to support the peace process, he explained.

Asked on Moroccan views on the ongoing efforts to heal inter-Arab relations prior to next month's summit, Benaissa said Morocco supports any effort meant to cement Arab ranks and settle divergences between some Arab states.
