Mubarak statement on the occasion of the election of new israeli prime minister
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 2/8/2001

Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak has followed up with interest the results of Tuesday's Israeli election that brought Ariel Sharon to power at a crucial historic turning point in the Middle East peace process.

Egypt sees that the efforts already exerted in the negotiations on the Syrian, Lebanese and Palestinian peace tracks and the agreements and understandings reached within the framework of the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, should be adopted as a basis for future negotiations.

It slould be taken into consideration that they all aim at reaching a just and permanent peace in the Middle East and realizing security for all states within the framework of the principle of land for peace, the protection of mutual rights and the respect of mutual commitments. These should all aim at overcoming the state of total frustration prevailing in the the region, that constitutes the main cause for increased tension and violence and compounds potential risks that may arise should the peace negotiations collapse or the achievements made on any of the peace tracks ignored.

The peace process has witnessed positive developments, represented in establishing a number of principles on the three tracks.

These were based on international legitimacy as embodied in the United Nations Security Council Resolutions 242 and 338, the land- for- peace formula, respect of the national rights of the Palestinian people to self determination and establishing an independent state and the legitimate desire by all parties, including Israel ,to live in peace and security within their recognized borders.

As Egypt congratulates the Prime Minster-elect, it calls on him at the same time to adopt a policy that adds to and promotes the peace process, building on the progress already achieved in the negotiations with the outgoing cabinet.

This will reflect Israel's adherence to the commitment made by the Arab states; namely that just peace is their strategic option and the only way to realize prosperity, security and stability and close the file of the Arab-Israeli conflict.
