Arab parliamentary delegation urges for end to anti-Iraq sanctions

Speaker of the Moroccan house of representatives, Abdelouahed Radi, who is leading an Arab parliamentary delegation on an assignment at the European parliament, deplored on Wednesday the tragic consequences of the international sanctions on Iraq.

The delegation, who met with speaker of the European parliament, Nicole Fontaine, said infant mortality rate has been ramping to a worrying degree and the population is facing acute shortages of medicine and food.

Radi also recalled that several international organizations have been criticizing the disastrous effects of the sanctions, enforced in 1990, on the Iraqi people. He said the European parliament ought to open dialogue with Iraq and send a delegation to find out about the tragic humanitarian situation in the country.

Fontaine shared the Arab delegation views and said the European Parliament will send a mission to Iraq.

The Arab parliamentary delegation's mission comes in implementation of resolutions adopted by the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union meetings, mainly the APU council extraordinary session held in December 1998 in Amman.

The APU secretariat general appointed Radi chairman of the Arab delegation entrusted with undertaking contacts with the European Parliament and other legislative bodies to glean support for the lifting of the embargo enforced against Iraq in 1990. The delegation comprises legislators from Jordan, Algeria, Morocco and Yemen.
