Kuwaiti - Egyptian relations, mutual respect and understanding
Kuwait-Egypt, Politics, 2/7/2001

After wrapping up his successful visit to Tunisia yesterday, President Hosni Mubarak took an impromptu, four-and-a-half-hour journey to Kuwait, where he immediately resumed his tour of Arab states. He held a meeting with Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah, the Emir of Kuwait, immediately after his plane touched down, and the two leaders later spoke at an evening dinner banquet. The two leaders are slated to hold a third round of discussions this morning.

Our Kuwaiti brothers eagerly anticipated President Mubarak's visit for a number of reasons: the current situation in the Gulf region demands regular, high-level consultations; the Middle East peace process is heading into crucial stage in light of the Israeli elections; and Arabs must establish a unified stand on dealing with the new US administration of George W. Bush.

Our brothers in Kuwait also know beyond any doubt that the recently signed agreements between Egypt and Iraq will not come at their expense.

They are reassured that Egypt, with its leading position in the Arab world and unswerving commitments to its principles, bears the responsibility of building bridges between all parties. Egypt cannot and will not tolerate any challenge to the integrity or sovereignty of Kuwait, and rejects any foreign interference in Kuwait's internal affairs.

Egyptian-Kuwaiti relations are sisterly, based as they are on mutual respect and understanding. The Kuwaiti people acknowledge Egypt's role in liberating their land and our nation's immense contributions in the construction industry, in improving their education system, and in modernizing other industries.

Egypt, on the other hand, acknowledges that a number Egyptian expatriates live peacefully among their Kuwaiti brothers.

I can confirm that Egypt and Kuwait share an identical stance on regional and international affairs-a stance that is consolidated by regular contacts between President Mubarak and Sheikh Jaber Al-Sabah. The two leaders also support the land-for-peace formula, demand that valid international agreements be honoured, and believe that Arab solidarity must be strengthened. Only in that manner can Arab nations withstand challenges from the European and American economic blocks.
