OIC and Arab League chiefs in new york to urge for end of sanctions against Libya
Libya, Politics, 2/5/2001
The Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) and the Arab League have called for the lifting of the sanctions against Libya after the end of the trial of the two Libyans.
The two organizations' secretaries general, Abdelouahed Belqziz and Esmat Abdulmajid, will be attending on Tuesday in New York the fourth high-level meeting between the United Nations and regional organizations.
For the OIC chief, the verdict released by the Scottish court puts an end to the Lockerbie case, in conformity with international resolutions and the agreement reached between Libya and the concerned countries. The OIC also praised Libya's wisdom and flexibility in handling the issue and urged for an end to the sufferings of the Libyan people, caused by protracted sanctions. The OIC also supports Libya's right to obtain compensations for losses incurred.
The same stand was expressed by the Arab League which called for the immediate lifting of sanctions enforced in 1992 against Libya and suspended in 1999 after the north African country agreed to hand over its two suspected nationals to Scottish justice.
On January 31, a Scottish court condemned one of the two men to life imprisonment and acquitted the other.
