Moroccan women associations press for women's enlarged access to top positions
Morocco, Culture, 2/5/2001
A group of women rights advocacy associations and political parties adopted here on Sunday a memorandum designed to promote women's access to top positions.
The memorandum, to be submitted to the government, defines a package of measures reached after a series of encounters and workshops. The organizations say political will to promote women's political rights is a first step. They argue proclamation of gender equality is not enough but should be supported by a law materializing sex equality and underline the state's duty to work for a change.
They also proposed the creation of a watchdog body on gender inequalities in women representation in top positions and decision-making and the staging of public education and awareness campaigns.
For women's access to electoral positions, they say the electoral law should be changed and financial perks should be given to encourage parties presenting at least 33% of women candidates.
Other measures proposed include training of women candidates to elections, the creation of an observatory of equality and parity and the media contribution by making women executives more visible and associating women to all political debates.
