Egypt deals with Israeli institutions, not individuals
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 2/3/2001

Egypt's President Mubarak's political advisor Osama El-Baz said Thursday that Egypt does not deal with individuals in Israel but with institutions and policies.

"Should, in case of winning Israeli elections, Sharon adopted suicidal policies and maintained his old stances, he would then victimize his people and other peoples and Israelis would be the biggest losers," Baz told a symposium at the Cairo Book Fair.

He added that co-existence with Israel is possible, if it honours its obligations, abandons expansion and accepts the termination of its military nuclear programme.

Mubarak's aide advised the coming Israeli government to build up on what has already been achieved in the peacemaking drive, warning Israel that it would lose a lot due to clinging to obsolete notions.

Asked about possibility of Israeli attack on Egypt's High Dam, El-Baz said that Israel knows that Egypt is well prepared to deter any attack.

He called for exposing unjust and aggressive practices by Israel and its successive governments which had failed to commit themselves to what has been agreed upon.

"We have no bad intentions toward the Jews and we should make it clear that Israel has committed grave mistakes against Arabs," he added.

On Al-Aqsa Intifada (uprising), El-Baz said that the Palestinian people have convinced the Israelis that they cannot hush the Arab voice. He stressed that Intifada has caused 26billion-dollar loss to Israel and has upped the rate of unemployment from 6.1% to 8.1%.

On Lockerbie issue, El-Baz said that what is more important is that the conviction ruling is contested. He hoped that the Libyan convict would appeal the verdict, adding that he believes that the evidence of this case is weak.

He voiced his confidence that the UN Security Council ultimately would lift sanctions imposed on Libya since 1992.
