Branches opened for the Syrian parties
The Qatari daily al-Watan highlighted in a report from Damascus in its Tuesday's issue the news that the Syrian communist party ( Youssef Faisal branch) has opened a headquarters in al-Raqq while the Communist party ( Khaled Bakdash wing) has opened a headquarters in Homs. The paper added, according to well-informed sources that several parties at the National Progressive front are intending to open similar branches.

A Palestinian official said on Tuesday that the UN secretary General Kofi Annan is trying to convene a meeting between the resigned Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak and the chairman of the Palestinian Authority Yasser Arafat before the Israeli elections on February 6th. The Palestinian official who asked not to be identified said that international efforts are being exerted by Annan to attain this meeting and that the Palestinian authority is not against it but nothing was decided yet, to this effect. The Chairman of the World Bank James Wilingston, currently visiting Lebanon, has denied any link between the World Bank WB giving of aid and loans to Lebanon and the request to send the Lebanese army to the South. In a statement to the Lebanese daily al-Safir issued on Tuesday, the WB chief added that the WB does not impose any political pressures concerning its loan policy. Go
