Regional, Politics, 1/30/2001
The Arab League interior ministerial council opened on Monday its 18th session, with the participation of several Arab home ministers, including Morocco's Ahmed El Midaoui.
The session was opened by Tunisian home minister, Abdellah Kaabi who read out a speech on behalf of president Zine El Abidine Benali.
The speech highlighted the very delicate circumstances in which the meeting is held, marked by the existence of tension spots in several parts of the world, especially in the Middle East where the Palestinian people is facing daily aggression and is making enormous sacrifices to recover their rights.
The Tunisian president also said the council was set up to upgrade cooperation in security issues between member countries and coordinate efforts to fight all forms of criminality both in the Arab world and in cooperation with other members of the international community.
Of the meeting agenda, he said the inclusion of items of road safety and the role of families in social education are positive steps in identifying most efficient means to gather the needed conditions for the society integrity and invulnerability.
The meeting, to close doors on Wednesday, will also review annual reports related to the implementation of a number of plans which have been approved, such as the Arab media plan on security issues and crime prevention and the third Arab strategic plan to fight drugs and terrorism.
A report released by the Tunis-based council secretariat general says during the council's 17th session, a total of 21 conferences and meetings were held, yielding fruitful results in strengthening cooperation among security bodies in the Arab world.
