Damascus immunity lifted of three member of parliaments over corruption
Syria, Politics, 1/30/2001
The Syrian people's Assembly (PA) parliament has lifted immunity granted to parliament members from three PA members under charges of " corruption" " bribes" and " smuggling of currencies" outside the country. This is measure is the first of its kind since long years in Syria.
Well-informed sources in Damascus told the London- based al-Hayat in its today's issue that the speaker of the parliament Abdul Qader Qaddoura told the PA members in a session held on Sunday evening that he gave the permission for the " law to interrogate three members of the Parliament: the chairman of the General federation of peasants Mustafa al-Ayed and Rafiq Darwish and Muhammad Maihoub, the two members of the executive bureau of the Syrian general federation of peasants."
This was however, made according to an " official book " addressed by the economic security court to the ministry of justice asking for " lifting immunity" of the three members of parliament after the court had received a report by the " inspection and the audition committee" accused the three men together with the lawyer Mu''weyah Abdul Wahid of stealing the " public assets " of a sum exceeds 10 millions Syrian pounds.
