Morocco reaps fruits of participation at Berlin Green week
Morocco, Economics, 1/29/2001
Morocco, which participated for the 40th time in Berlin's green week (international food and agriculture exhibition), with the conclusion of trade deals to export Argan oil, Argan honey and Amlou, a southern Moroccan local dish made up of almonds, honey and Argan oil.
Argan oil, an ecological product, is highly appreciated in European markets, worried by the mad-cow disease, and growing increasingly attracted by biological products. Morocco is the sole producer of products derived from Argan, a tree that only grows in southern Morocco.
But for co-manager of the Moroccan stand in the fair, held Jan.18-28, the success of Moroccan 40th participation which earned it the status of "guest of honor" should not be measured only by the number of transactions concluded. Other long-term achievements should also be noted, he added citing the promotion of Moroccan tourism, agro-food, cultural and handicraft products in a market of 80 million people enjoying one of the highest living standards in Europe.
For its 40th participation, Morocco had a stand seven times larger than the usual size and conducted a promotion action that encompassed tourism, culture and handicraft items.
The Moroccan cuisine was also very popular among the German and foreign visitors although the Moroccan stand location in the extreme south of the fair was not very favorable.
On Friday, the stand received its 200,000th visitor, a German family who were offered a basket of the exhibited products. Other prestigious visitors included German president, Johannes Rau.
Besides Morocco, only three other Arab countries were presented, namely Lebanon, Syria, and Tunisia.
The first edition of the Berlin fair was held in 1926.
