Morocco-Mauritania, Economics, 1/29/2001

Construction works of a 14-km-long stretch between Guergat (southern Morocco) and Nouadhibou (northern Mauritania) will be launched soon, said Friday an official from Moroccan equipment ministry.

Moulaye Mustapha Azizi, who chaired the Moroccan delegation to a meeting Friday of the Moroccan-Mauritanian committee following up preparations for the Nouadhibou-Nouakchott road, part of a trans-Saharan road to link Tangiers (northern Morocco) to Lagos (Nigeria), said important progress has been achieved in the great project cherished by the two countries heads of state.

He added the geophysical survey is ready while technical studies will be completed in 2001 and the socio-economic and ecological feasibility studies will be finished next February.

The next stage will start looking for funds so that works can start the soonest, he said.
