On arresting a member of the Jordanian anti- normalization committee
Jordan, Politics, 1/29/2001

The news on detaining one member of the anti- normalization committee on Saturday has provoked Jordanian trade union and party reaction.

Jordanian trade union and party sources said that the Jordanian trade unions council chaired by the chairman of the engineers union Azzam al-Hneidi held an emergency meeting on Saturday evening in which the issue of these detention was discussed.

Al-Hneidi said that the council was surprised by these detention and condemning them in being a violation to the law and to the constitution. He said that these detention measures were made after the committee had published names of the second shift of those who normalize with Israel.

He added that a committee was formed under his chairmanship and the membership of the physicians, lawyers, journalists, artists and agronomists unions to follow up this issue and meet with the Jordanian official to settle this issue and release the detainees.

Jordanian bar association sources said that the bar called for halting trials for one hour on Sunday in protest of arresting the Jordanian lawyer Muhammad Abu Jbarara one member of the Bar and his colleague at the anti normalization committee.

For his part the chairman of the Jordanian bar association Saleh al-Armouti described these arrests as an aggression on the main rights ensured by the Jordanian constitution.

Earlier the Jordanian government of Ali Abu al-Ragheb has warned the trade union anti normalization committee from publishing the second list which the committee described as " normalizers " with Israel. The government justified that this step ( publishing the names of normalizers ) will affect the Jordanian economy and prevent investors from investing in Jordan.

The sources said that the acting Jordanian prime minister Awad Kheilfat raised the issue of normalizers during his meeting with members of the trade unions council on Tuesday.
