Syrian source denies Ross statements
Syria-USA, Politics, 1/29/2001
A Syrian official source has categorically denied statements made by US former US ME co-ordinator Dennis Ross and the US ambassador to Israel Martin Indyk published recently in which they claimed the readiness of the late President Hafez al-Assad after the Oslo agreement to sign the peace agreement with the Israelis without waiting a settlement for the question of Jerusalem.
In its Saturday's issue, the London based al-Sharq al-Awsat quoted the Syrian source as asserting that these statements are null and void. The source added that " Ross is lying and he never had the respect of the late President Hafez al-Assad who considered Ross as the maker of all traps and stumbles the continuity of the peace process." The source unveiled that the Syrian leadership had intended not to receive Ross if he would have continued to acquire the same post as a coordinator for the ME peace process.
On the other hand, the paper also quoted a well-informed Syrian source as saying that the oil pipeline existed between Syria and Iraq has not operated yet and that work is still in the experimental phase; adding that no date has been set to start investments in this pipeline.
