UNICEF lauds Egypt's achievement in child rights domain
Egypt, Culture, 1/27/2001

UNICEF has praised Egypt's achievements in the child rights domain and the great strides it took in the past decade towards this end.

UNICEF's Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, in the fund's first regular session this year Wednesday night, said that infant and child mortality rate in Egypt dropped by 50 percent as compared to the year 1990.

In an address on UNICEF's program in Egypt, he said that in 2000, 95 percent of Egyptian children were vaccinated and elementary school enrollment increased from 87 percent in academic year 1990-91 to 94 percent in the year 1998.

"Gender gap in elementary education had dropped from 12 percent to five percent in the past five years," the UNICEF official said.

"Egypt has a wealth of information and technical know-how that can help UNICEF in its activities in Egypt and promote the UNICEF-Egypt dialogue," he noted.

On his part, Egypt's Ambassador to the UN Ahmed Abul Gheit following the discussion of the UNICEF report, said that Egypt appreciates the active UNICEF role in all spheres to enhance the rights of children throughout the world in general and in Egypt in particular.

He called on donor countries and the international community to extend financial assistance to enable Egypt to complete health, education and development projects that UNICEF has started in Upper Egypt.

He said that he was concerned over the shortage of funds allocated to UNICEF's program.
